About the position
Responsibilities
• Ensure accurate communication of clinically relevant information with patients, families, and co-workers.
• Transcribe dictation and edit voice-recognized reports for various medical documents including physicals, progress notes, consultations, operative reports, and discharge summaries.
• Assign correct patient identification to each transcribed report.
• Complete reports according to established templates, standards, and guidelines.
• Recognize and clarify inconsistencies or inaccuracies in medical dictation with the provider or supervisor.
• Utilize spell check tools to ensure report quality.
• Direct the routing of completed reports as per guidelines.
• Operate word processing, dictation, and transcription software and troubleshoot issues as necessary.
• Assist in collecting and entering data for departmental statistics and reports.
• Support pathologists in gathering data for regulatory requirements.
• Maintain slide files and manage send-out processing and records.
• Assist with specimen accessioning and other clerical tasks.
• Follow safety guidelines and report any unsafe conditions.
Requirements
• Minimum 2 years of transcription experience required.
• Minimum 1 year of hospital-based transcription experience preferred.
• High School Diploma or equivalency required.
• Medical terminology coursework required.
• Medical transcription certification program preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, medications, and laboratory values.
• Ability to concentrate and possess excellent listening skills.
• Ability to research new medical terms and diseases using reference materials.
• Ability to work under pressure and autonomously with time constraints.
• Understanding of relevant legal concepts, such as confidentiality.
• Strong English language and grammar skills.
Nice-to-haves
• Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) preferred.
