12News, a leading ABC and NBC affiliate in Southeast Texas, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Broadcast Journalist & Sports Director to lead our comprehensive sports coverage. This is a pivotal role for a passionate and skilled professional who can captivate audiences with compelling storytelling and insightful analysis. As the Senior Broadcast Journalist & Sports Director, you will be instrumental in maintaining and enhancing this reputation.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned sports journalist with a proven ability to not only report on game results but to delve into the narratives, human-interest stories, and broader implications of sports. You will be responsible for shaping the sports priorities for 12News, collaborating with our leadership team to develop engaging and informative content across all platforms. This role demands a proactive individual who can identify and pursue compelling stories, going beyond the basic statistics to deliver insightful and captivating broadcasts.
What You’ll Do:
- Lead and Inspire the Sports Team: Oversee all aspects of our sports coverage, ensuring high-quality, engaging, and accurate reporting that aligns with the 12News brand.
- Strategic Story Development: Collaborate with the news leadership team to identify and prioritize major sports stories, ensuring comprehensive coverage of local and regional events.
- Anchor & Report Live Sports: Anchor and report live from a variety of sporting events, delivering engaging and accurate broadcasts as both a reporter and anchor.
- Content Creation & Storytelling: Develop compelling story ideas, write, shoot, and edit engaging sports stories for both on-air broadcasts and digital platforms. Focus on crafting narratives that resonate with our audience.
- Dynamic On-Camera Presence: Deliver news with excitement, accuracy, and a captivating personality. Utilize strong on-camera skills to connect with viewers.
- Digital Content Management: Generate original content through social listening and independent research, and write and post daily updates on all digital platforms, including Twitter and Facebook.
- Interviewing & Research: Conduct thorough research and conduct engaging interviews with athletes, coaches, and other sports figures to ensure factual accuracy and compelling storytelling.
- Source Development: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with sports contacts for general assignment and specialized coverage.
- Technical Proficiency: Utilize the latest editing and photography tools to create visually appealing and informative sports packages.
- Field Reporting: Operate a newsgathering vehicle to travel to various locations for live reports and game coverage.
- Ad-Hoc Responsibilities: Perform other tasks as needed by the leadership team, including writing, shooting, editing, and reporting on breaking sports news.
What You’ll Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field preferred.
- Demonstrated strong natural on-camera presentation skills and a passion for sports.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in sports journalism, with a proven track record of delivering engaging and accurate sports coverage.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly and concisely relay information to the content team.
- Proficiency in photojournalism, video editing, and content management systems (ENPS, Edius preferred).
- Solid understanding of professional journalistic ethics and standards.
- A compelling portfolio showcasing examples of sports anchoring, breaking sports reporting, and impactful sports stories.
- Ability to generate creative and engaging live shots under pressure.
- Strong social media skills, with an active and engaging sports presence on Twitter and Facebook.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to thrive under tight deadlines.
- Ability to remain calm and composed in live, breaking sports situations and changing events.
Work Environment: Primarily office-based with frequent travel to sporting events.
Physical Demands: Light physical work involving sitting, walking, lifting, bending, and standing.
Travel: Frequent (more than 25%) travel required.
